Why can’t I have a robot girlfriend?

Hi, I’m a robot "fan". Which means I read Robot magazine, I own and experiment with Lego Mindstorms, and I’m a programmer by trade. I know that one day "Synthotics" (a word I made up) will be a reality. (Synthotics - a branch of robotics specifically concerned with the mimicking of humans; by combining relevant fields of sculpture, animatronics, and traditional robotics) Traditional robotics don’t like to deal with “faking it” where animatronics does. With the marriage of these two we could produce an exciting product. So the question remains, “Why is it taking so long to get a robot girlfriend?”
Is it loneliness or natural curiosity? It’s funny; I’ve asked this question before and received extreme mixed feelings. This is a question your children will have to face and it’s easy to sit back now and not seriously deal with Synthotics or 4D Virtual Reality (3D with touch sensors). 15 years ago, if you dated online, you would be considered a lonely, pitiful person, afraid of real human contact. People would pity you and make jokes of our ultimate present. How are you any different from these closed minded people with no imagination? And do not think of this as an “anything goes freedom” topic. Lets not forget that human contact is a need stronger than hunger, and to dismiss them as something for those “monsters” or “weirdo”. Anyway, thanks to those with constructive comments. But I also remind them, respectfully, do not underestimate our natural urges.

It’s a tragedy, really, that you should witness the threshold of the Age of Robots, and yet you’ll probably grow old and die before that sweet robotess enters your life. Maybe you could be 90 years old, and the robotess will look like Anna Nicole Smith, and she’ll make the last of your years happy. Absolutely there is no question at all that in the future robots will be at least as intelligent as she.

You do realise that even with a constructed "girlfriend" you will still be lonely? Go and get a real girlfriend, trust me, its easier.
The market would be too small. Most people prefer the real thing. Robots would need a true artificial intelligence equal to that of a human being. And I don’t see that happening for a LONG time. Besides, they can never replace the spontaneity of a real human being.
Even if the future of robotics gave robots the most advanced artificial intelligence known to man, they still would not be about to comprehend love, or heartfelt fealings, or worry, or pain. So I don’t think that would even happen, sorry dude.
What a good idea man! Do these synthotic girls the sooner the better! What is discouraging though, that some jealous hypocritical fleshy ladies would organize a society like “Synthotic Rights Watch”; so vote for me in senator elections and i promise you to block their petitions against your activities. We also forbid production of synthotic men so that our wives could not cheat on us. Cheers!
Dude…exactly my kind of question. I have some good news for you. You are quite lucky to be in a age where robot girlfriend is a distinct possibility. If you look at the way computer processing speed is increasing exponentialy every year, it is predicted that by 2029 computers will pass the turing test (which means humans will not be able to differentiate between a fellow human and computer). That will be the start of true AI and by then every other field would’ve grown exponentialy that you will virtualy have a world with robots and humans living together. People talk a lot of "feelings", "love" etc.. but i am pretty damn sure they dont know what they are talking about..everything happens in the brain and its just a combination of genetic code, chemicals and neurons..right now its way too complicated..but it cant be like that forever..whatever we have now was extremely complicated 20 yrs ago..Only short-sighted fools say ‘its impossible’..So in the next few years, when human brain is re-engineered syntheticaly, virtually everything is possible including the so called "feelings, love, emotions". I suggest you read ‘Singularity is near’ by Ray Kurzweil to really get a in-depth understanding.
