I have been married to a Canadian for 2 years and will live there with full citizenship one day. My research has shown the NDP to be the most left leaning mainstream party. But what party can Canadians rely on for trade union support, help for the venerable and equality? The best we have in the UK is the labour party (although they have become shockingly centrist over the past 15 years) or socialist fringe parties. Only sensible answers PLEASE!

As far as the old ‘eighties style TUC affliated Labour Party goes, the closest thing in Canada is the NDP. The Green Party is a little further to the left, but without the connection to organized labour or socialism–they are (perhaps unfairly) seen as a "single-issue" party, with that issue being the environment.
The Liberals and Bloc are Centre-Left, and the Conservatives are mostly Centre-Right There really aren’t any mainstream "Leftist" or "Rightist" parties in the Canadian political landscape.

in general, and historically, the NDP, although Layton is not much of a leader. And provincially, whenever the NDP are in power, they show themselves to be much like the federal Liberals
In many parts of the country, the Green Party has been picking up the left wing vote. I suspect within the next decade they will pretty much wipe out the NDP
