Diversifying your investments might include purchasing various stocks in plenty of different industries. It may include purchasing bonds, investing in money market accounts, or even in some real property. The key is to invest in several different areas – not one.

“Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket!” You’ve probably heard that over and over again throughout your life…and when it comes to investing, it is very true. Risk diversification is the key to successful investing. All successful investors build portfolios that are widely diversified, and you ought to!

Over time, research has shown that investors who have diversified portfolios usually see more consistent and stable returns on their investments than those who invest in one thing. By investing in several different markets, you will actually be at less risk also.

For instance, if you have invested all of your money in one stock, and that stock takes a significant plunge, you will most likely find that you have lost all of your money. On the other hand, if you have invested in ten different stocks, and nine are doing well while one plunges, you are still in reasonably nice shape.

A nice diversification will usually include stocks, bonds, real property, and money. It may take time to diversify your portfolio. Depending on how much you must initially invest, you may must start with one type of investment, and invest in other areas as time goes by.

This is all right, but if you can divide your initial investment money among various types of investments, you will find that you have a lower risk of losing your money, and over time, you will see better returns.

Experts also suggest that you spread your investment money evenly among your investments. In other words, if you start with $100,000 to invest, invest $25,000 in stocks, $25,000 in real property, $25,000 in bonds, and put $25,000 in an interest bearing savings account.

I am only 16 and I am aspiring to be a Stock Broker. I asked a question yesterday where I was given a lot of information that made me even more interested in the Stock Market. Are there any books that you guy’s can recommend for a beginner? Something that goes over the basics so that I can get into the more advance books?

Also, what do you think about these three books?

As for the first answer, thanks! I wouldn’t think a place would hire me at my age, but I could give it a try. I basically wanted to get a head start and learn how the market works, etc, and I thought the books could help me. Am I just wasting my time or will they actually help me out?

As for the second answer, I want to be a Stock Broker, build up a clients and advise people on what stocks to buy/sell by using trends in the market and what not.
So the Stock Broker isn’t the one that actually analyzes the market and interprets daily happenings and what that would do to the stocks?

Two years ago I decided I wanted to learn about the stock market and online trading. I signed up for a sharebuilder account and bought two stocks– 1 share of Apple Computer (went from 45 two years ago to 97 today) and 80 bucks worth of another company that has since gone bankrupt. I also have in my sharebuilder account labeled "money market."

Bare with me I’m an idiot here– know very little about stocks. Now I check sharebuilder every so often to look at my 1 share of Apple Computer. My question is– now what?

If I wanted to trade it and cash in my money, do I have to pay a fee? What if I want to buy another company’s stock (actually, I want to buy a share of QQQQ)?

If I want to buy more stocks, what do I click on? It says, "automatic investments ". Is an automatic investment a one-time trade, cause that’s what I think I’d want to do?
