If you are ready to invest funds for a future event, such as retirement or a child’s college education, you have several options. You do not need to invest in risky stocks or ventures. You can easily invest your funds in ways that are safe, which will show a decent return over a long period of time.

First think about bonds. There’s various types of bonds that you can purchase. Bond’s are similar to Certificates of Deposit. In lieu of being issued by banks, however, bonds are issued by the Government. Depending on the type of bonds that you buy, your initial investment may double over a specific period of time.

Mutual funds are also relatively safe. Mutual funds exist when a group of investors put their funds together to buy stocks, bonds, or other investments. A fund manager typically decides how the funds will be invested. All you require to do is find a reputable, qualified broker who handles mutual funds, & he or he will invest your funds, along with other client’s funds. Mutual funds are a bit riskier than bonds.

Stocks are another vehicle for long term investments. Shares of stocks are essentially shares of ownership in the company you are investing in. When the company does well financially, the value of your stock rises. However, if a company is doing poorly, your stock value drops. Stocks, of coursework, are even riskier than Mutual funds. Even though there is a greater amount of risk, you can still purchase stock in sound companies, such as G & E Electric, & sleep at night knowing that your funds is relatively safe.

The important thing is to do your research before investing your funds for long term gain. When purchasing stocks you ought to select stocks that are well established. When you look for a mutual fund to invest in, select a broker that is well established & has a proven track record. If you aren’t ready to take the risks involved with mutual funds or stocks, at the least invest in bonds that are guaranteed by the Government.

USD to Indian Rs (INR) exchange rate is approx 1:44 however as per the PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) the real rate is 1:10. This is controleed by Indian govt. However they are working on a 5 year plan to make the Indian currency fully convertible. Does that mean the exchange rate would move towards the real raito ? It might be useful to keep in ming the high projected economy growth rate and the opening up of economy by Indian government. India is opening up its retail and other service industries, which the big investors are eagerly waiting for a long time. Retail alone is expected to be bigger than IT. NYSE has already bought 5% stake in Indian National Stock Exchange and 60 billion dollars is waiting to enter the Indian financial market (mutual funds).

I would like to start investing in the stock market. I am talking about active trading (but not day trading!). Something like holding stocks for multiple days or weeks (I think it’s called position trading). Since there are so many stocks out there, I don’t know where to start. I plan to stay away from penny stocks for sure. I am looking for a moderate return, nothing crazy. I don’t plan to blindly follow tips however. I remember a tip that was given to me by a "so called financial" advisor back in 1999, where he suggested that I invest more of my 401K in Internet stocks. At that time, I resisted to do so!.

I would appreciate any advice of where to look. What’s Your experience?

I am also not planning to do day trading, becuase of the high risk and lack of time (I have a day job). It looks like I will be doing what they call position trading (buy and sell in the time frame of weeks-months).

Im a 20 year old college student. Before I begin, let me say that I do not have a job right now—I usually only work in summers. Anyways, I have always been interested in the stock market and investing (although its not my major *sighs*). I just opened a free checking account 2 days ago and put in 0–I dont really have anything off the top of my mind I need….so….

Since my money really isnt doing anything in my checking account I figured if I could maybe start out by buying a few stocks to see where it goes…..so where should I start?…..

I heard mutual funds are good b/c they basically do the investing for you…which is good b/c I dont have that much time, and I dont know that much about investing anyways.

On a side note…Im probably only going to start out buying a few stocks (no more than )……is it even worth it?….can I even find a mutual fund or something where I can start out investing tiny amounts of money like this??

Hello, I am 29 year old self employed programmer working from home in the US. If I were to get a Roth IRA with mutual funds, do I have to constantly monitor and buy/sell stocks within the IRA? I used to trade stocks and used to freak out when the stock tanked in one day, so I told myself I will not get involved in that.

I am thinking that a financial advisor can pick a few good mutual funds for me and all I have to do is send a certain amount of money to it per month and when I am 55 1/2 years old I can begin withdrawing. Please let me know how this works and thanks.

Background:

I’m an older guy (35) getting into investing. I have owned companies, can read a balance sheet, read the WSJ daily, but am still a newbie investor. I have K to deposit into the account.

I plan to invest in some stocks - the majority of which will be year+ long investments, but I will probably execute a risky short term trade once a month with some money set aside for that.

I also plan to hold a few mutual funds for year+ long investment. In fact, mutual funds will be an important part of my invement plan, but don’t result in frequent transactions, as they are held more than traded.

The Question: Which online brokerage is best for this type of trading? Where can I get the lowest cost (assuming the trading level above)? Please include monthly and hidden fees in the answer. I want the "real" cost, not just the .95 per trade they show on the banner, if possible.
