i have around 5,000 and i am looking into investing it now that everything is so cheap. and maybe sell in 6+ months. not looking to be a regular trader, just want to do a one time deal. i actually have an account at smith and barney set up through my job but i am very limited as to what i can do with that one since they buy stock for us twice a year.

I would like to start investing in the stock market. I am talking about active trading (but not day trading!). Something like holding stocks for multiple days or weeks (I think it’s called position trading). Since there are so many stocks out there, I don’t know where to start. I plan to stay away from penny stocks for sure. I am looking for a moderate return, nothing crazy. I don’t plan to blindly follow tips however. I remember a tip that was given to me by a "so called financial" advisor back in 1999, where he suggested that I invest more of my 401K in Internet stocks. At that time, I resisted to do so!.

I would appreciate any advice of where to look. What’s Your experience?

Mutual Funds is what I have already in my 401k. I don’t plan to touch that.

I am also not planning to do day trading, becuase of the high risk and lack of time (I have a day job). It looks like I will be doing what they call position trading (buy and sell in the time frame of weeks-months).

Well i have been jobless for about 5 months now, and college is about to start! While i had a job i managed to save up 3k, (really 10k but spent the rest on a car) and am wondering is that enough to get going on the market?
I also found out that you need a online broker, and I’m thinking of going with TD Ameritrade, because of reviews, as much as i know I’ve read a lot of bad reports on E-Trade…
I already know most of the basics but i heard that not even the basics is good enough, so i started to read the NSE document,

Im a 20 year old college student. Before I begin, let me say that I do not have a job right now—I usually only work in summers. Anyways, I have always been interested in the stock market and investing (although its not my major *sighs*). I just opened a free checking account 2 days ago and put in 0–I dont really have anything off the top of my mind I need….so….

Since my money really isnt doing anything in my checking account I figured if I could maybe start out by buying a few stocks to see where it goes…..so where should I start?…..

I heard mutual funds are good b/c they basically do the investing for you…which is good b/c I dont have that much time, and I dont know that much about investing anyways.

On a side note…Im probably only going to start out buying a few stocks (no more than )……is it even worth it?….can I even find a mutual fund or something where I can start out investing tiny amounts of money like this??

A long time ago Japan decided to close its borders. Of course it was and is an island country, so foreigners coming to Japan needed to come by boat. Then, one day the U.S. decided to force Japan to open its ports for trade. The U.S. had goods to sell and was tired of this rogue nation being so isolationist.

It’s funny now that the U.S. is planning to build physical walls to close off from Mexico. Most Americans aren’t allowed to go to Cuba. Passports are starting to be necessary for Canadians crossing the border (previously just a drivers license could do the trick).

Should the rest of the world force the U.S. to open its doors the way the U.S. once did to Japan?

And what does the term "Day Trader" mean? I heard some one refer to people that generate income from trading stocks as a "Day Trader." Anyway, heres my question How do people generate any reliable income from trading stocks? I have a basic understanding, very basic of the stock market. Basically i don’t want to pay tax on my forex earnings, i pay enough in my regular job. I live in canada and trade forex using a UK based regulated platform. I have Citizenship in Canada and Ireland and have active bank accounts in both countries. Because I live outside of Ireland for More than 183 days I do not need to pay income tax in Ireland, so if I when I want to withdraw money from my trading account i have it transfered directly to my irish bank account i can keep it here earning interest and not subject to any tax. Is it true Forex trading brokers (such as FXCM which is the platform I use) will not disclose account details to gov agencies? Therefore If Canadian revenue does not know I have made this money and the money I have in Ireland is tax free.

Can someone give me just a basic rundown on how this works?

Question 1: Is this something you can start doing with little expense, or does this fall under ‘you have to have money to make money’?

Question 2: Im not trying to get rich quick, but like many of us, my family is short on money right now. Internet jobs are pretty much all a scam, and the job market where I live is awful. I am just looking for a way to get extra cash from time to time and a friend mentioned ameritrade. Comparing stocks and mutual funds, are either something you can do to help pay the rent next month, or are they both long term multi year deals?

Yes, I know I sound desperate, but I figured it wouldnt hurt to ask about something that can potentially help my family.
