thesis is supposd to be first sentence.
question is to asses the statement
The statement, “The South never had a chance to win the Civil War” is very valid when looking at the military, economic, and political characteristics of the Confederate States of America. When looking at the preparation the Confederacy did for the war and comparing it to the preparation the Union did for the war, the Confederacy’s military was not as good, its economy was not as strong, and its politics were problematic.
The first problem was the politics of the Confederacy. When the country needed money, it turned to “greenbacks.” This was when money was printed without and gold or silver to back it. Even though this was a good source for currency, it caused massive inflation. It is estimated that when this money was printed, inflation of over 9,000 percent occurred throughout the nation. In the North, the major source of money was bonds. Bonds are loans that the government takes from people. During the war, it is estimated that there was only an inflation of 150 percent, not nearly as much as in the Confederacy. Another difference between the economies of the two sides was trade. In the North, they were able to continue foreign trade and market because the war was being fought in the South. However, in the South, the North had created a naval blockade and it was difficult for the South to continue cotton export to countries like England and France. Later in the war, the North had also gained control o the Mississippi River, and so the Confederacy lost its major ports in Louisiana. Finally, the Confederacy did not have any foreign recognition. At first, England and France recognized the Confederacy because of the King Cotton Diplomacy, which was the belief that the South’s major export, cotton, would win them foreign recognition. However, these two countries did not take any sides during the war and did not help the Confederacy. Since the South had a weak economy and no foreign aid, it was very hard for the country to financially support itself during the war.
The second problem with the Confederacy was its politics. When the Confederacy was formed, it was based off of the Constitution of the United Stated but it had two major differences. First, it allowed slavery in the Confederacy, and second, it gave the individual states more power. The power given to the states was problematic because when the states were not at in agreement over something, the central government did not necessarily have the final decision. Even if there was a decision made by the central government, an individual state could overthrow that decision for just that territory. For example, the governors of Georgia and North Carolina (Joseph Brown and Zebulon M. Vance, respectively) would keep their state militias as separate as possible from the nationwide army. The North had a better situation with its politics because it was not a new nation and it had a centralized government that could make final decisions.
The final problem with the Confederacy was its military. Since it had a weak economy and no foreign aid, it was very hard to support the war financially. They also had bad military experiences from the start. In the beginning of the war General Winfield Scott (Union) created the Anaconda Plan for defeating the Confederacy. The three main points of this plan were to have a naval blockade, take control of the Mississippi River, and capture Richmond, VA (Confederate Capital). Since there was a naval blockade, the South already had limited resources to fight the war. At the Siege at Vicksburg, Union General Ulysses S. Grant gained control of the Mississippi which in turn completed the naval blockade as well as dividing the Confederacy and stopping all foreign trade.
Now even though there are all of these Union victories disabling the Confederacy, the Confederates did do very well the beginning of the war. They won the First Battle of Bull Run, which was the first major battle of the Civil War. They were able to prevent the Union from capturing the capital at Richmond, VA. They forced the Union General George B. McClellan to retreat at the Seven Days Battle and won again at the Second Battle of Bull Run. Since the Confederacy had all of these early victories, it could be said that the South did have a chance to win the Civil War. However, it is most likely Union flaw because the Union Generals who lost these battles were later removed.
In conclusion, the statement “The South never had a chance to win the Civil War” is very valid. Its military was not as good as the military of the North, the economy was very weak compared to that of the North, and the politics were not as strong as the experienced government system in the North.

“The South never had a chance to win the Civil War” is not a valid statement in my opinion.
The South almost won the civil war when it defeated the North at Antietam and then invaded Pennsylvania. If General Lee had not been so aggressive at Gettysburg, attacking entrenched Union line at Cemetery Ridge, and ruining his army, the South could have gone on to capture Washington DC and win the war. If General Longstreet had been in charge at Gettysburg, he would have slipped away and entrenched the army between the Union army and Washington DC and allowed the Union army to destroy itself attaching the entrenched Confederates, then taken Washington and end the war. Only because Lee could not think defensively at this point, and Longstreet was ignored, was why the North won Gettysburg. But it was a real close thing!
