What kind of classes in college would I take to learn about the stock market, investing, and the like?
Can you also recommend any books? I was looking for some on Warren Buffet but theres quite a few out there.
Any other ideals or recommendations?
This class is not for a career, I’m not a businessman or anything just looking to learn and gain more knowledge in the field(s).
Thank you.
Thank you Frank! If anyone can top that answer, then you certainly have the best answer. ![]()

In college, look for economics and finance classes. Some will be more market-oriented than others, but they will all help you understand the market better. Ask your dean, or the dean of the economics/finance department. They will likely be very happy to orient you.
There’s a ton of books, at all levels. Likewise, there’s a whole bunch of free information on the internet. Since investing is such a personal activity, you’ll get lots of opinions, which are often passionately defended. So, here’s my two cents
For online materials, I particularly like:
- Informed Trades: http://www.informedtrades.com/trades.php?page=freetradingcourses (no affiliation; just a free, well-structured course)
- Warren Buffett’s Shareholder Letters: http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/letters.html
(Whether you subscribe to value investing or not, the guy must know a thing or two…)
A couple of basic books you might find useful are:
- Jason Kelly – The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing
- Jim Cramer – Jim Cramer’s Real Money: Sane Investing in an Insane World. I must say I’m not a fan of Cramer, but I’ve hear glowing reviews of this as a basic guide.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

I would try to gather as much information on the internet from legitimate sources (entities that are educational vice trying to sell you something) like investopedia.com.
Also investing for Dummies series….Fundamental, Technical…etc This books will give you a Cliff Note version of investing. Get these from Library and see if any are worth purchasing.
Best thing I can recommend is to be like the market itself…don’t take sides…Bull or Bear, Fundamental vrs Technical, Growth vrs Value, Momentum vrs Contrarian, Trader vrs Investor.
Keep an open mind, because they are masterful proponents of every investing style imaginable.
When you have some basic investing knowledge…you will get more out of the class.

Finance. And I would recommend Buffettology by Mary Buffett.

You could just play this stock market game if you want to learn how the stock market works. It follows the real stock market exactly and you can actually earn real money if you do well in the game. You get $1 million fake dollars to invest and you can ask questions to real investors that play the game.
Here’s the link for the free stock market game:

It’s free and it’s alot of fun. I’ve learned alot about investing from it.
