I am going to Germany in 10 days(the 28th) and I am planning on taking 1200 USD overthere, I know I will get a better exchange rate if I go through the ATM, but I have no idea if my pin number will work, I think it would be easier to trade my money in the "old-fashioned" way and I hear that sometimes you can get a better transaction fee, with large sums of money.

There is no advantage to exchanging a large sum vs. a small sum. The ATM is still the best way to go. Your PIN WILL work in Europe.

Actually, it’s more difficult to exchange money the "old fashioned" way. ATMs are open 24 hours a day. Banks in Europe often have more limited hours than US banks. Non-bank money-changers are open more hours but have higher fees and worse exchange rates.
Your PIN number should work just fine. I’ve used my ATM card in Europe many times without any problem. Just check the website for your bank’s ATM network. You can find out in advance where ATMs on the same network are located in Germany. I suggest telling your bank in advance that you will be using it in Germany. Otherwise, they may think that the card was stolen and cut it off. At the same time, you can have them confirm that your PIN will work if you’re still nervous about that.
I stopped carrying travelers checks to Europe 10 years ago and haven’t missed them yet.
